Current Work

In my photography, I select textures, colours and abstract form from the natural and built environment. These themes overlap with my painted work, in which I use colour, three dimensional constructed reliefs and texture to simulate natural surfaces and phenomena.

I am interested in how people interact with the rural and urban environments, and how in seeking to control nature we have become increasingly isolated from it.

A keen interest in cinema and work on a number of film projects has led to my use of effects derived from photography and cinematography in my painting. Effects such as depth of focus and light refraction help explore concepts of captured memories and moments in time. When painted as a photographic negative, images can become eerie and unsettling, suggesting nostalgia and a time forever lost. Breaking the image into pixels similarly distances the viewer from the subject of the painting to a point, where, at close quarters, it becomes abstract. Whilst at a distance, the viewer remains able to “decode” the distorted, or fragmented image.

Ongoing Projects

I'm working with five other Shropshire based artists and a team of other supporters and volunteers to investigate, design and build a new visual art gallery/studio space in South Shropshire, known as the Cloud Gallery, using eco-design and sustainable construction.

To date, we have successfully run a creative outdoor eco-architecture weekend at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms. With a team of workshop delegates and volunteers, we constructed a simple sculptural demonstration building using load bearing straw bales and timber.

The events continued in 2008 with an installation at Shrewsbury Music Hall with the Cloud Gallery artists collective and Thinking Space seminar in February on sustainable building.
